The authors of Love Across the Universe sat down and answered a series of questions about writing, science fiction, romance, and more.

This interview isn’t of the authors, but rather their characters! Because of the sheer length of so many interviews, we’ve broken this post into four parts.

PART FOUR:

Sheri Queen—“Red Sand”

Interviewer: What are your favorite childhood memories of the beach? (Or any vacation spot if the beach wasn’t an option).

Bria: I went to a beach once when I was a kid and loved the feel of the sand between my toes.

Thayne: I never saw a beach until I found one beneath Mars as an adult, so naturally, I bought it.

Interviewer: What do you like best about your partner physically, and why?

Bria: Thayne’s a well-muscled guy who can rock a business suit, but it’s how he looks out of that suit that I can’t get enough of. And did I mention he has the most talented hands?

Thayne: Bria’s one of those women who’s a natural beauty and doesn’t realize it. There’s nothing fake about her.

Interviewer: What drives you crazy about your partners, and why?

Bria: Crazy in a good way is how he just knows what pleases me and makes sure I get it. He has a gift and he’s not afraid to use it—sometimes 3 times in one night. It can be exhausting, but I’m not complaining.

Thayne: Bria is a woman who speaks her mind and won’t back down if she thinks she’s right, which can drive me nuts sometimes. I’m not used to compromising like I do with her, but I love having someone who stimulates my mind and my body. That’s why once a night isn’t always enough.

Interviewer: If you were offered an obscene amount of money, what would you do with it? Why?

Bria: I would use it to create protected habitats. Trans Life Corp has their head up their ass. They refuse to fix the imbalance they’ve helped to create. All they’re interested in is profits.

Thayne: I have an obscene amount of money, so I’m helping Bria kick some Trans Life Corp butt.

Interviewer: What’s next for you and your partner?

Bria: We’re meshing his vision for his Mars resorts with what I’ve learned from my mistakes with virtual living on Earth. That, and my sister is getting married. She’s been kind of pushing me to do the same.

Thayne: Your sister’s right. We should get married.

Emmerite Sundberg—“Fluid”

Interviewer: What are your favorite childhood memories of the beach? (Or any vacation spot if the beach wasn’t an option).

S: I did not go on the beach, but my family and I used to ride the big fish in the deep water when we wanted to get away.

I: I grew up on a space station, so… yeah.

Interviewer: What do you like best about your partner physically, and why?

I: Ugh, everything. But if I have to choose, I’d say the feeling of her skin. Her skin is so much softer than my own.

S: Her lips. She uses them very nicely.

Interviewer: What drives you crazy about your partners, and why?

I: The way she moves is such a turn-on.

S: Oh, so we are assuming that this is not a negative? Ok. Her directness is a turn-on for me. She knows what she wants and goes for it. This is a trait I lack, sadly.

Interviewer: If you were offered an obscene amount of money, what would you do with it? Why?

S: That’s easy. I would pay someone to come up with a cure or vaccine for the disease that killed my people. And then I would pay for everyone left in my world to receive it.

Interviewer: What’s next for you and your partner?

I: We haven’t quite decided yet. Maybe I will bring her with me off-planet, or we might try to find the rest of her people. Right now, we are living in the moment. Time will tell.

K.W. Taylor—“Reprogramming”

INTERVIEWER: What are your favorite childhood memories of the beach? (Or any vacation spot if the beach wasn’t an option).

ALEX: Before leaving Earth, my husband and I were married on the beach. It was one of the last times my feet touched my home planet. At the time, I thought it was very romantic. As a child, I couldn’t go to the beach, as my summers were spent in training camp. By the time I did make it to Hawaii as an adult, I was enthralled.

JEAN: I did not have a childhood. In programming, I was given data access to all known information on Earth geographic features, including beaches. They seemed beautiful.

INTERVIEWER: What do you like best about your partner physically, and why?

ALEX: I’m still learning to think of Jean as a physical presence. Our connection so far has been more cerebral.

JEAN: Alex is very beautiful, but also very intelligent. I do like when she smiles at me, because it means something I’ve done has pleased her.

INTERVIEWER: What drives you crazy about your partner, and why?

ALEX: It’s hard to know what Jean is thinking, if he thinks the way we think, and whether or not we’re that much different or alike at all. He’s an enigma. That’s also part of what I like about him, too.

JEAN: Alex is prone to using non-standard metaphors and sarcasm, which takes me a bit longer to process than more straightforward statements. But it is her facility with language which shows off her creativity and humor, as well.

INTERVIEWER: If you were offered an obscene amount of money, what would you do with it? Why?

ALEX: I love where we’ve ended up, but I think I would return to the space station and confront Sam. Beyond that, I’m not sure what would happen.

JEAN: Money seems immaterial. I’m content.

INTERVIEWER: What’s next for you and your partner?

ALEX: I need to mend my broken heart. Then we’ll see.

JEAN: I want to protect and please Alex, no matter what.
