For Love the Bell Tolls Blog Tour: Romance & Horror

Romance and Horror

Romance and Horror are both genres that appeal to the emotions—one inspires love, the other fear. We asked the authors what was it like combining the two.

Read Gallo – “Blood and Petals”

It was great. I do it all the time. I get bored when the stakes aren’t life or death, lol.

Serena Jayne – “Kiss Me Dead”

The promise of a happy ever after made for a nice balance for the horror elements.

Cara McKinnon – “The Doors Between”

Combining romance and horror was actually a lot harder than I thought it would be. I am a fan of several authors who do this well (I’m particularly thinking of KJ Charles and Jordan L Hawk), and they make it look very easy. But I kept straying too far to one side of the coin or the other, and had to rein myself in from making the horrific bits too scary, and the romantic bits too sappy.

Sheri Queen – “The Circus Train”

The two play off each other well to create tension and mystery, as well as hope.

Heather Sheldon – “Lost Love Found”

A lot of my writing holds suspense along with romance. I’m very comfortable writing in these styles.

Kylie Weisenborn – “Undead Men”

It was a lot more fun than I thought it would be! My novel I’m working on currently is a YA fantasy with romance elements, and I love when I get the chance to include some gory, creepy details about werewolves and trolls. Writing this story let me make some tone and imagery decisions I wouldn’t have chosen to do otherwise.
